The 12 Elements of Successful Goal Setting
Studies of successful people have shown that they write goals that contain similar elements. These elements are the following:
1. It is written down.
2. It is specific.
3. It is obtainable. Your goal has to be realistic--it is not realistic to lose ten pounds in one week--and you have to believe that you can reach the goal.
4. It involves your behavior and not someone else’s.
5. It includes a way to measure progress and successful completion.
6. It is something that you're fully committed to.
7. It is supported by strong reasons "why" you want to achieve the goal (the benefits of meeting this particular goal).
8. It includes the specific date when you will begin working on the goal.
9. It includes a projected date when you will reach the goal.
10. It is divided into manageable action steps. The projected dates for working on and completing each action step are identified.
11. It includes a way to be held accountable.
12. It is kept in a place where you can see it often to make sure that you're constantly reminded of your goal and that you don't lose focus. You can get creative here and include images, vision boards, mind movies, or anything else that will help you keep your eye on the ball.
