The Importance of Measuring for Goal Setting
The second component of the definition of "goal" set forth by Gary Ryan Blair is that your goals be measurable. Gary explains that in sports they keep score throughout the entire game, from beginning to end. At any given moment in time you know if your team is winning or losing, or if the game is tied. Depending on what the score is and how much time is left on the clock, that will dictate each team's strategy.
If you're driving and all of a sudden the gas gauge light starts blinking, you know that you need to stop and get some gas; it's a quick measurement system. When you're cooking by following a recipe you'll notice that for every ingredient there's a specified amount to be added: a tablespoon, a teaspoon, half a cup, and so on. If your child is sick you take their temperature and that lets you know whether the medicine you gave them is working or not.
So essentially a measurement system lets you know if you're winning, losing, or tied. It's a behavior modification system: if you're behind you can take corrective action. A simple illustration is setting a goal to lose five pounds in five weeks. Each week you weigh yourself to measure whether you’re on the right track. If you notice that you’re not losing approximately one pound per week, you know you either need to cut down further on your calorie intake or exercise more.
For those people interested in taking their lives to the next level and ending 2009 with a bang, Gary has created a program called The 100 Day Finish Strong Challenge which will expose you to the best ideas, the best strategies, and the best personal practices for living a successful life. This program will expose your mind to what it means to be the best, and it begins on the 23rd of September, 2009.
There's a special report created by Gary which is titled: "How to Create Your Own Big Bang!" which you can access right away, for free, simply by clicking here.
